A retaining wall is a civil engineering structure that generally exists some balancing lateral pressure to resist the lateral pressure of earth,soil and water. An retaining wall is also built to resist the seepage water pressure.

The main and basic function of retaining wall is to retain the soil i.e. lateral pressure. Generally retaining wall is built to resist the sloped earth and water front structures.

Stability Conditions for Retaining Wall:

A retaining wall must have to be stable against the upcoming forces.The properties that is needed to stabilise the retaining wall are–

1. The retaining wall must be strong enough to withstand with the bending moment and shear forces acting on it.

2. The retaining wall should not be slide.

3. Retaining wall should not topple or overturn.

4. Maximum pressure at base should not exceed the safe bearing capacity of soil.
